Raised Real: Organic Baby Meals Review

Transitioning to Solids

After months of only milk, solid foods are definitely a game changer. One more thing for busy moms and dads to worry about! Per our pediatrician’s recommendation, we slowly introduced baby Nora to a new food every couple of days to make sure she had no allergic reaction. We started with sweet potatoes, avocado, broccoli and then introduced fruits, dairy and nuts. I would go to the store, buy the organic fruits and veggies, chop them, steam them, and then puree. Although it is exciting to introduce your baby to new foods, it is a lot more work than just nursing or bottle feeding.

Curated Meals for Baby

Once we knew that Nora had no food allergies, it was time to mix it up a bit. When it comes to baby food, there are tons of options. Make it yourself, buy it in jars, squeeze bottles, organic, allergen-free, we could go on and on. We had seen Raised Real on various social media channels and wanted to give it a try.  They are a local San Francisco brand and tout their product as being organically sourced, plant based, with 8 grams of sugar or less. Each meal is well balanced and developed by a nutritionist.

The shipments come with 20 pre-packaged meals: 5 different mixtures, 4 of each. They are flash frozen and ready to be put in the freezer for storage. Each meal is clearly marked with it’s ingredients, which you can also see through the clear packaging. The shipment also comes with ingredient cards that contain more in depth nutritional information.

To prepare a meal, you simply empty the frozen meal into a saucepan with 3 tablespoons of water. Cover and bring water to a boil over medium heat. Reduce to a simmer and steam for 5-6 minutes. Depending on your baby’s age you can either puree the steamed food, mash it, or let your child eat it as finger food. I pureed our meals in a blender since it was Nora’s first month of solids.

After it cooled down it was time for the taste test. Success!!! She gobbled up the whole meal.

Conclusion

It was nice knowing that our little girl was getting a good balance of healthy fats, proteins, and was consuming organically sourced, quality ingredients with each meal. Raised Real puts in much more thought into a well rounded meal than most parents ever have the time to do. The convenience of delivery cuts out trips to the grocery store, which is a whole chore in and of itself. I would compare it to a Blue Apron of baby food. All of the ingredients are conveniently delivered to you in correct portions, but you still have to put some time and effort into the final preparation. After trying it out I found that it is much easier making two or more steamed packets of food at a time and saving the pureed portions in the fridge for later that day or the next versus steaming and pureeing a new packet each mealtime. If you have a baby food maker (steamer/blender) it is also easier than steaming in a pot. The cost comes out to $4.75 per meal, which is not bad considering it saves you the time meal planning and grocery shopping.
